Questions Every Traveller Should Ask

Before You Book,
Ask The
Right Questions.

Hotels list amenities. Listings don't always reflect reality. This site exists for one reason: to make sure the questions you should be asking — about air conditioning, about what's actually in your room versus the lobby, about what you're actually paying for — get asked before you check in, not after.

The questions are below
"Air cooling" and "air conditioning" are not the same thing. One uses a compressor and refrigerant to lower room temperature. The other moves warm air around. Know which one is in your room before you book — especially in Paris in summer.
Air Conditioning

Questions About Cooling

Question 01
Is the air conditioning in the guest rooms compressor-based and refrigerant-driven — or is it a fan system described as "air cooling"?
Some properties list air conditioning as an amenity when the system in place circulates ambient air without cooling it. In warm weather, this is a fan. Ask the front desk directly: does the system use a compressor and refrigerant to reduce room temperature?
Question 02
Is air conditioning available in every guest room, or only in common areas, the lobby, or the restaurant?
Central air conditioning in shared spaces does not cool your room. Confirm whether your specific room category — not the hotel generally — has working, refrigerant-based air conditioning.
Question 03
Can the air conditioning in the room be individually controlled, and is there a minimum temperature setting?
Some properties operate HVAC systems centrally, setting a floor temperature guests cannot override. Others limit cooling to 24–26°C regardless of outdoor temperatures. Find out whether you control the thermostat, and what its range is.
Question 04
Does the air conditioning system operate 24 hours a day, or only during set hours?
Some hotels run cooling systems only between certain hours or only when outdoor temperatures exceed a threshold. If you're travelling in summer, ask whether cooling is available continuously throughout the night.
Question 05
If the room does not have true air conditioning, do the windows open — and what does the room face?
In Paris summer heat, a room facing south or west without cooling and with sealed windows is a different situation than one with openable windows on a shaded courtyard. Ask both questions if cooling is in doubt.
Amenity Accuracy

Questions About What's Listed

Question 06
Are all amenities listed on the booking page currently operational and available in the specific room category you're booking?
Hotel listing pages are not always updated when facilities are under maintenance, removed, or limited to certain room types. Call the property, not the call centre, and ask about the specific room you're booking.
Question 07
When you're paying a premium for a listed amenity, have you confirmed in writing that the amenity will be available during your stay?
If a specific feature — such as air conditioning, a pool, a fitness facility, or a restaurant — is a deciding factor in your booking, get written confirmation from the property before finalizing. A booking confirmation that lists amenities is useful if there's a dispute later.
Question 08
Is there a difference between the amenities available in standard rooms versus upgraded categories at this property?
At some properties, features like air conditioning, views, or bath amenities are only available in superior or deluxe categories despite appearing in general hotel listings. Always confirm which amenities apply to the specific room type in your booking.
Star Ratings in France

Questions About What Stars Mean

Question 09
When was this hotel's French star rating last verified by Atout France?
French hotel classifications are renewed every five years. A hotel may currently display stars awarded at an inspection that is years out of date. The property's amenities, ownership, or standards may have changed significantly since the last review.
Question 10
Do you know that air conditioning is not a mandatory criterion for 3-star hotel classification in France?
Under Atout France classification rules, air conditioning is only mandatory for 4-star and 5-star properties. A 3-star hotel can be fully compliant with its classification and have no guest room cooling whatsoever. The star rating tells you the classification tier — not whether your room will be comfortable in July.
Question 11
Is the hotel's star rating the French Atout France classification, or a platform rating assigned by a booking site?
Booking platforms sometimes apply their own star ratings that don't correspond to the official French government classification. Look for the official blue Atout France plaque, which indicates the property has been independently classified.
Booking Smart

Questions About Value

Question 12
Are you paying a rate premium based on an amenity that you haven't independently verified will be available in your room?
Rate differences between hotel categories are often justified by specific amenities. Before paying more for a room based on a listed feature, verify that feature is real, operational, and in your specific room type.
Question 13
Have you read recent guest reviews specifically mentioning the amenity you're relying on — not just the overall rating?
Overall hotel scores can stay high even when specific facilities disappoint. Search recent reviews filtering for terms like "air conditioning," "air cooling," "hot room," or "no AC." Recent reviews from the same season are more relevant than overall averages.
Question 14
Do you know your options if an amenity listed at booking is not available upon arrival?
Document the discrepancy at check-in. Request a room change, a rate adjustment, or a written acknowledgment from the front desk. Keep your original booking confirmation showing the listed amenities — it's your evidence if you pursue a complaint or chargeback.
Pre-Booking

The Call to Make Before You Book

Ask whether guest room air conditioning uses a compressor and refrigerant — not simply whether "air conditioning" is available.
Confirm cooling is in the guest rooms, not only in the lobby, corridors, or restaurant.
Ask if the system is individually controlled from within the room, and what the minimum temperature setting is.
Ask if the system runs 24 hours, or only between set hours.
Confirm the amenity applies to your specific room type, not just the property generally.
Get it in writing — a confirmation email listing amenities is documentation if there's a dispute.
Read recent reviews filtering for the specific amenity, from the same season you're travelling.
Don't pay a premium for an amenity you haven't verified. A lower-rated hotel that confirms its cooling system is worth more than a higher-rated one that can't.
